Old - Life is a vapor...or a wave
Whether you love or hate this movie, it’s entertaining and holds your attention til the end.
Old is a psychological thriller that offers some silly moments but great acting throughout its 108 minute runtime. It’s shot beautifully on 35mm film, with a very pronounced film language. It offers a bulk of close up, off centered shots of the characters. I think these close ups are meant to convey an isolation or loneliness which is what aging tends to do. But also when you bring another face in the frame an intimacy of relationship.
All in all even though it’s a movie with cheap thrills it’s also a strong reminder that life is short. While it doesn’t dive too heavily into the philosophical side, it definitely causes the audience to think about the brevity of life and the shortness of relationships. James 4 says life is like a vapor. Old says it’s like a wave on the seashore. Time is a commodity no one can buy back. We are all aging every second and getting older and closer to our death every day. With that kind of perspective lives can change and hearts can heal. We can grow closer to each other rather than further away.
At the end of the day, At least the folks in this movie can all say they spent their entire life at the beach…
