The Night Of - The Truth Obscured 5/5

This is the best mini series I've ever seen. The acting, the tone, the cinematography, the pace, the direction, the score, the look, every aspect of it is done masterfully.

It's all about how the truth is obscured by the "justice" system. Even the cinematography plays into this. We have a lot of shots with things blurry or people hidden or boxed in by things in the foreground, or in a corner of the frame. This all gives the intended affect of obscurity, subjectivity, and things being hidden. As the audience I strongly felt the affect of this brilliant approach.

One metaphor of the series is the cat. The cat pictures Nasir's plight. Both are at the crime scene, so they're both involved by proximity. Both end up in a bad place, both end up being cared for and helped by John Stone, both end up being saved by John Stone. The real hero here is John Stone, played masterfully by John Turturro. A lonely, small time defense lawyer, who happens to be at the right place and right time.

At the end of the day we learn that the truth, will eventually emerge, and that it indeed sets free. However a corrupt justice system will forever change people's lives, for better and for worse.
