The Wailing - A Horror Movie About Faith and Doubt 2.5/5

Wail means “a lamenting sound people make in
mourning someone's death” and this movie provides no shortage of that. Yes there’s loads of horror and gore and scares but with all its religious references I think the wailing is simply movie about grief, grieving over the death of a loved one. Because it’s grief that makes us question God and question the events orchestrated in our lives.

And all of that ties back to faith. Who and what do you have faith in? Especially in these moments of grief. Do you have faith in a village guardian? A shaman? Do you have faith in doctors and the police? Do you have faith in someone from outside the community? And is it possible to have the wrong kind of faith or faith in the wrong kind of people?

While this movie doesn’t provide a lot of answers it poses a lot of questions and it shows that at the end of the day where you place your faith matters. I think 1 Peter 4:12-20 about entrusting yourself to a faithful Creator in times of trial and suffering are absolutely fitting for the theme and message of this movie.
